Encouraging Students to Be Civically Engaged: Foundations of Social Capital

ASCD Express 13.06 – Citizens Are Made, Not Born

In “Citizens Are Made, Not Born: How Teachers Can Foster Democracy,” Robert Maxwell underscores ways in which teachers can promote civic engagement in response to social issues that are meaningful to students.

There are some great ideas and resources here for teachers. Students can easily identify issues within their communities that are in need of attention. Through a teacher’s own social capital, the teacher can help students to become civically engaged. Subsequently, students will increase their social capital as they navigate community contacts to initiate visible social change.
